Description
Aug. 9 - 1943
Dear Mama –
Just a few lines to let you know that I am feeling fine and I hope you are the same. I would have written sooner but I have been nearly sick with a head cold and I just came off guard duty. My cold is a lot better and I can’t imagine how I caught one in this climate. Well I guess I will get my teeth fixed now as I have an appointment with the dentist at 10:30 in the morning.
I kind of half way think that I will get a furlough this month and if I do I will put my teeth off until I come back. If I leave before the first I will probably drive that car to Galveston, Texas and then take a train home from Houston. Mama, you shouldn’t do so much sewing and just stay down on the coast and take things easy. This place is so full of flies that I can hardly write for knocking them off. You asked me if I got Gene’s picture, yes I got it but he looks awfully thin to me unless it has just been so long since I have seen him. I wrote him a letter but I still don’t know whether he ever got it or not.
This is the rainy season out here and according to the natives there is more rain than usual but it sure makes the nights nice for sleeping. I just spilled ink slapping at flies as you can see by this paper. I received a letter from you this afternoon and I hope Ola is feeling a lot better by this time. If I should happen to get in Mobile before the busses start running I will probably go by her house on my way home. If I have time tomorrow night I will try and write all my sisters a letter but I don’t guess I know Dees[Dee’s] address.
Tell Vance that when I come home I want some shrimp as I haven’t seen any in nearly a year. We have fish about twice a month but I don’t especially care for them. Tell the boys that I want them to take me swimming and fishing also. I was glad to hear Rich got a new car and he shouldn’t have much trouble paying for it. I will have to close now so tell everyone hello for me.
Goodnight
Lots & lots of love & kisses
Bill
