Dear Mama –
Just a few lines to let you know that I am doing fine and I hope this finds you well. I am still hanging around here to see what happens and am now working in the D.M. clothes warehouse. My old outfit pulled out yesterday for [illegible] Falls, Wash. And it sure made me want to go with them. As things stand now I will either be discharged or else stay here for quite a while. One thing I don’t like about this outfit is that we will never go across. My leg wasn’t considered strong enough for a line outfit so

I am stuck here with six of my friends. Sometime between now and the first of the month I will know what I am going to do. We went on an all day picnic Sunday up in the mts. to Laguna National Forest and we really had a good time. Mama, I saw some trees up there so big that it just didn’t seem possible. Today I received three letters from you and one from Ola so that made me feel a heck of a lot better. I got the papers yesterday and that news about Joe Mitchell

serves him right. I sure am sorry to hear about little Janelle not liking school and if she belonged to me I wouldn’t send her. Well, a new bunch moved in here last night waiting for a discharge and a lot of them are from Alabama but I don’t know any of them. There is a big forest fire up in the mountains not far from here and we don’t have any lights tonight. Mama, there is so many squirrels out here that they are darned near tame.
Sunday if I don’t have anything to do a friend and myself will probably ride up to San Diego or Tia Juana and spend the day. If I am lucky enough to get a discharge I am going to either San Diego or Los Angeles and take a train home from there. This is one fine campy for a rest cure as there is nothing to do but sleep or go to a show as there is no towns close by. Well, Mom its getting dark so I will have to close until later, so,
Goodnight
Lots & lots of love & kisses
Bill
