Dear Mama –

Just a few lines to let you know that I am feeling fine and I hope you are the same. I haven’t heard from you since last Wed. but I guess my mail got mixed up in moving. We are pretty busy packing so I don’t guess we will be here very much longer. We move around so much that I don’t even bother to unpack all my clothes. Mama, we are right in Pancho Villa’s old hideout and the tree is still here that he was hung from. People come from all over

the country here to hunt bear, mountain lions and bob cats. From where I am sitting I can see flags flying that show where Old Mexico begins. There is a couple of large cavalry outfits here and it is a pretty sight to see these horses drill to music. Our barracks is situated on the side of a mountain surrounded by large oak trees. Anna likes beautiful scenery and she should try and see some of these valleys between here and San Diego.

There is a valley about fifteen miles from here where 500,000 acres have been burning for over a week. Some 600 soldiers are kept busy day and night fighting this. I have met another bunch of new men and like them and the camp pretty well. At night you can sleep under two blankets and a comfort with ease. I am going to try and get an exam tomorrow to see if my knee is fit for active duty or else quit the whole thing. I will close now hoping to hear from you soon.

Lots & lots of love & kisses
Bill
