Dear Mama –
Just a few lines to let you know that I am doing fine and I hope this finds you well. I still haven’t gotten paid or heard anything new about getting out but some are leaving this week and maybe my papers will be in that bunch. Friday night, this company had a dance with girls from El Cajon an La Meso[La Mesa] and Saturday I was a table waiter in the mess hall so I have been pretty busy these last few days. There is also an awful forest fire about 12 miles from here and the camp has been on

the alert for the last two days. At this time there is a bunch of negroes from here and a bunch of marines fighting it but we can see the flame and smoke coming up above the mountains. The hospital here is overloaded with injured and some have already died. One good thing, this company doesn’t have to fight fire but once in awhile we have to take a load of soldiers out there to fight it. Right now I am pretty hot as I just got through with my washing. We can’t send any laundry out so that is a pretty good sign that we won’t be here very much longer.
Tell Anna that I really appreciate her letters and I am going to write her if I don’t head for home in the next few days. I was sorry to hear about Meg’s baby and I hope she is better by now. The first chance I get I will get some post cards for D. and I also want to send Janelle one. Mama, there is about three thousand cavalry horses here and the[they] sure are pretty especially when they parade. Well, it is nearly time for early chow so I will close, hoping to see you real soon.
Goodnight
Lots & lots of love & kisses
Bill
