Dear Mama –
Gee, I just got your mail for the last two weeks and I was sure glad to hear from you. I am feeling fine, only worn out, and I hope you are well and feeling good. Well, I have really had a great trip but I won’t be able to tell you about it for awhile yet.

Well, our company is splitting up and I am not going to California but will stay here for awhile with a skeleton outfit and then I think I will be sent down to Tucson, Arizona. I sure hope I go down there as I like the place better and it is closer home. After we are there for a few months I will probably be sent to a camp just seven miles from Hollywood. When I get my furlough I will be glad to be sent to Hollywood because it is about the best place in the U.S. for a soldier. Mama, I have drive through the desert, in places, where you can go far at least fifty miles without seeing a living thing, tree or house. Mama, all I want to make me happy is for you to live in good health until this war is over and
(OVER)

I can get back home to take care of you. I have lots of good times and don’t mind army life so much but I think a lot of being back with you. I am sorry the Gene is dissatisfied but there is only one thing to do and that is to make friends and obey orders and this lightens it up a lot. From the looks of things this war will probably wind up this year and right now lots of men are getting discharges that no one ever hears about.

Everytime you get a chance you go for a visit and don’t worry about me as I always get along fine in the army. Mama, I am going to go to bed now but will write tomorrow so give my love to all and –

Goodnight
Lots & lots of love & kisses
Bill
