THE BUST OF CUDJOE LEWIS
Back where he belongs
Photos by Mike Kittrell/Staff Photographer
Above: John Peoples, a deacon at Missionary Union Baptist Church, hoses mud off a bronze bust of Cudjoe Lewis on Wednesday. The bust, which sat on a brick pedestal in front of the church on Bay Bridge Road for decades before it was stolen Jan 2 or 3, was recovered Monday when a man taking a walk spotted it in a ditch near the site of new-home construction in Daphne. The bust of Lewis, who was the last survivor of the slave ship Clotilda, was created in 1959 by a local historian who fashioned it from a carving made by a teenage student of his.
At left: Missionary Union pastor A.J. Crawford Sr., left, Peoples, center, and Lebaron Barnes examine the brick pedestal for the bust. Church members brought the bust back from the Daphne Police Department on Wednesday, prompting Crawford to comment that he was "so happy to have him back."

Ongoing disagreement over fate of Cudjoe Lewis bust flares up
[...]
By Russ Henderson
Staff Reporter
A group of about 100 marchers and speakers praised the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., then marched from Plateau to the heart of Prichard on Saturday, singing civil rights protest songs and holding hands.
But organizers said a continuing dispute over the bust of Cudjoe Lewis marred their inaugural Martin Luther King Jr. Peace and Unity Walk.
