Last Slave Ships? Wanderer and Clotilda: Echoes in the U.S. Relationship with Africa
Raymond W. Copson
Paper prepared for presentation at the annual meeting of the African Studies Association
New Orleans, November 11-14, 2004
Latest Revision, January 2, 2005
Abstract
The voyages of the Wanderer and the Clotilda, slave ships that reached U.S. shores on the eve of the Civil War, grew out of a movement sweeping the South in support of resuming the slave trade on a large scale. The voyages constituted major human rights violations, and the perpetrators were never brought to justice. The Wanderer and Clotilda events underscore certain continuities in the U.S. relationship with Africa, including the limited commitment the United States Government has been willing to make to achieve stated humanitarian objectives in Africa.
