The name, or variants of it, go back at least to the 1880s: an "African Colony" is shown on the 1889 Boudousquie Map of Mobile, located near Magazine Point. Clotilda tale inspires tough but vital 'Dreams of Africa'
The extraordinary story of the Clotilda, Africatown and Cudjo Lewis has long begged for a competent scholarly analysis. Now, at last, a new book provides it, "Dreams of Africa in Alabama: The Slave Ship Clotilda and the Story of the Last Africans Brought to America" (Oxford, $35) by Sylviane Diouf is a compelling work grounded in prodigious research on multiple continents. Indeed, the notes and bibliography account for almost a quarter of this book's overall length.
