U.S.S. Alabama Leaves Washington
Since 1950 she had been in the mothball fleet at Puget Sound Naval Shipyards, Bremerton, Wash. Captain J.G. Twing (ret.) accepted the ship in June, 1964 for the U.S.S. Alabama Battleship Commission. She was demilitarized as regulations require. Concrete was poured in the recoil mechanism of her 5-in. and 16-in. guns and holes were burned in her breeches. On June 16, as a Navy band played "I'm Alabama Bound", she began her 1 day tow to the Todd Shipyards in Seattle (this tow cost $3,700). Here special towing gear was fitted and her twin propellers and other underwater gear were removed to reduce drag.

U.S.S. Alabama
This flotilla welcomes the U.S.S. Alabama home as she prepared to stop at McDuffie Island for ceremonies. From her launching at Norfolk, Va., she saw action in World War II for 28 months in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Mostly it was in the Pacific that she gained the nickname the "Lucky A" because not a single carrier was hit while escorted by her. She carries from 2400 to 3200 men abroad while engaged in campaigns in Guam, Gilbert Islands, Mariannas, Okinawa, the Philippine Sea (was 1st ship to sight enemy aircraft, of which 403 were destroyed that day), Kwajalein Atoll (Marshall Islands) and Honshu, where she joined the Missouri while Gen. McArthur signed Peace Treaty. After treaty she served as carrier to bring men home.

Third U.S.S. Alabama
Listed by the Navy Dept. as Battleship No. 8, she, unlike her predecessors, was destined for long service without ever engaging in battle. She accompanied the Great White Fleet of Pres. Teddy Roosevelt on its 46,000 mile voyage began in 1907 as an around-the-world Good-Will Mission. (This card reproduced from an original printed in San Francisco when the Fleet stopped there in June.) She served as a training ship during World War I and was scrapped in 1922 in accordance with the terms of the Washington Naval Conference. Her silver service, given by Alabamians, reposes in the Dept. of Archives and History in Montgomery. Ship built by Cramp Ship and Engine Building Co. of Phila., Pa.

When built, she was capable of generating enough electricity to supply city of Birmingham. She contained: 62 million lbs. of steel, 82,000 lbs. of tin, 1,030,000 lbs. of zinc, 796,000 lbs. of nickel, enough rubber for 10,000 auto tired, 26 five-room houses could have been built from the wood and she had the equivalent of 110 five-hundred lb. bales of cotton; the 2,022,000 lbs. of copper in her construction, if minted, would amount to nearly $3,000,000 in 1ยข pieces/ Twice as long as the Comer Bldg. Description
An account of the resource
The influenza pandemic of 1918, also known as the Spanish flu, struck the state of Alabama in September of 1918, with devastating results. The pandemic peaked in Mobile, AL, in late October, 1918. <br /><br />This collection follows news articles from the local newspaper, The Mobile Register, from October, 1918, to January 1, 1919, when the city was breathing a sigh of relief and looking towards the new year with hope. World War I was over, and the influenza pandemic was subsiding. The Register's editorial of January 1, 1919, exclaimed:<br /><br />"<strong>Hail great Year! Glad are they who have lived to give you greeting</strong>."
