World War I was over, and the influenza pandemic was subsiding. The Register's editorial of January 1, 1919, exclaimed:<br /><br />"<strong>Hail great Year! <text>This collection primarily features a collection of handwritten letters by PFC Ruse O'Neil Sullivan to his mother, Isabel, in Mobile, during his service in the U.S. Army, specialty Automotive Parts Clerk.

Born in Perkington, MS, on 1/30/1911, Ruse O. Sullivan had been a resident of Mobile, AL, for 77 years when he passed away on 9/15/1989 at the age of 78, according to his obituary in The Mobile Register, 9/16/1989. He served in the army from 8/7/42 - 12/3/43, at which time he was honorably discharged at Camp Lockett, California, by reason of Sec II AR 615-360, signifying a physical disability that rendered him unfit for military service, according to his enlistment record. His character was listed as “Excellent.”

This collection was donated to the Local History & Genealogy Division of Mobile Public Library by the family of Ruse Sullivan’s daughter, Marcia Ann Sullivan Biggs, after her passing in 2023. Ann Biggs was a Mobile Public Library retiree and a Local History & Genealogy Division supernumerary who was passionate about history and researching family ancestry.

Since 1950 she had been in the mothball fleet at Puget Sound Naval Shipyards, Bremerton, Wash. Captain J.G. Twing (ret.) accepted the ship in June, 1964 for the U.S.S. Alabama Battleship Commission. She was demilitarized as regulations require. Concrete was poured in the recoil mechanism of her 5-in. and 16-in. guns and holes were burned in her breeches. On June 16, as a Navy band played "I'm Alabama Bound", she began her 1 day tow to the Todd Shipyards in Seattle (this tow cost $3,700). Here special towing gear was fitted and her twin propellers and other underwater gear were removed to reduce drag.</text>

Keel laid Feb. 1, 1940. Christened Feb. 16, 1942 at Norfolk Navy Yard, Va. by Mrs. Lister Hill while Navy band played "Dixie". A crowd of 30,000 heard Gov. Frank Dixon and Navy Secretary Frank Knox. Ship cost $80,000,000. Took 12,225,421 man-hours of labor to produce. Held back in ways at launching by chains weighing 600 tons. Created a 8 ft. wave when cruising; stood 90 ft. above water line. When built, she was capable of generating enough electricity to supply city of Birmingham. She contained: 62 million lbs. of steel, 82,000 lbs. of tin, 1,030,000 lbs. of zinc, 796,000 lbs. of nickel, enough rubber for 10,000 auto tired, 26 five-room houses could have been built from the wood and she had the equivalent of 110 five-hundred lb. bales of cotton; the 2,022,000 lbs. of copper in her construction, if minted, would amount to nearly $3,000,000 in 1¢ pieces/ Twice as long as the Comer Bldg. (B'ham's tallest). Could travel a mile-a-minute and hurl a ton of steel 20 miles. </text>
