Captured by the Vincennes The Voyage of the Julia Dean to the African Coast--Trapped by an American Cruiser and Brought to Norfolk But Not Condemned From the San Francisco Call. "About two years before the secession war," said Joseph Franklin, a well-known citizen of the First ward, "I shipped as cabin boy on the bark Julia Dean, a very fast sailer, which had a regular tonnage of 750, and before this voyage had been engaged in the fruit trade between Mentone, on the Mediterranean, and New York. We went after another kind of fruit this time, but, as we found out, the cargo didn't pay so well. From New York we went down to Charleston, S.C., where we laid in a lot of aguardiente, or Spanish rum, the proper commodity with which to barter for blacks. We shipped an American crew of sixteen hands, and we had an American captain and two officers, but in addition we had a Spanish captain, who was supposed to be a passenger, and a Spanish supercargo and stevedore. They really were the owners of the bark. Besides the fiery water in the hold we stowed away a quantity of barrel staves, which could easily be knocked together into barrels. Anybody would conclude that these staves were wanted for water casks, but as nothing fell out they were not needed. Of course the officers said nothing to show what the object of the voyage was. We gave out in the most assuring, innocent manner that we were bound on a trading voyage along the African coast for palm oil and ivory and anything else not contraband useful for a cargo. Timothy Meaher due to a bet made with several eastern gentlemen. They were passengers aboard a steamboat (not named) cruising up the Alabama River. The conversation concerned secession from the Union and gradually turned to the great risk involved in landing any more slaves in America, and from this came the bet by Capt. Gibbs (The following is a fictionalized account of the final voyage of the Clotilde--the last known shipment of slaves into the United States. The Clotilde was built in Mobile in 1856 by Captain William Foster. Foster was in command of her last voyage in 1859, and he negotiated the purchase of 125 African slaves for a fellow Mobilian, Captain Timothy Meaher. This story is based on Foster's handwritten recollections, in 1890, of this voyage.) Silently, the wooden skiff moves along the bank of the dark river. The only sound is the constant hum of the delta mosquitoes as they swarm around in this breezeless July night.
