Title A name given to the resource Bishop Portier House, 307 Conti St. Description An account of the resource Photos of the Bishop Portier House on 307 Conti St., Mobile, AL "Perhaps our most delightful example of the "Creole Cottage," the Bishop Portier House, is through t to have been built in the early 1820's. It was acquired from a "free woman of color" and renovated by Claude Beroujon for the first Catholic Bishop, Michael Portier, in 1831. Most commendable, the Catholic Diocese has maintained the lovely building as a memorial to Bishop Portier, who founded Spring Hill College, the Bisitation Convent, orphanages, schools and hospitals. Most unusual are the balusters in the form of arrows in the elliptical stairwell. Bishops Dominic Hauncy, Jerimiar O'Sullivan and Edward Allen resided here as did Father Abram Joseph Ryan, "Poet-Priest of the Confederacy." It is currently in use as a private residence. This building is recorded in the Library of Congress by the Historic American Building Survey and is also in the National Register."
