Born in Perkington, MS, on 1/30/1911, Ruse O. Sullivan had been a resident of Mobile, AL, for 77 years when he passed away on 9/15/1989 at the age of 78, according to his obituary in The Mobile Register, 9/16/1989. He served in the army from 8/7/42 - 12/3/43, at which time he was honorably discharged at Camp Lockett, California, by reason of Sec II AR 615-360, signifying a physical disability that rendered him unfit for military service, according to his enlistment record. His character was listed as “Excellent.”

This collection was donated to the Local History & Genealogy Division of Mobile Public Library by the family of Ruse Sullivan’s daughter, Marcia Ann Sullivan Biggs, after her passing in 2023. Ann Biggs was a Mobile Public Library retiree and a Local History & Genealogy Division supernumerary who was passionate about history and researching family ancestry.

Dear Mama –

Just a few lines to let you know that I am doing a lot better and I hope this finds you well. This is Sunday and it sure has seemed like a long day. One of my buddies slipped in before visiting hours today and brought me an arm full of newspapers so I have read most all day. I asked the nurse today and she told me it would probably be the middle of the week before I could get out. I feel alright now and this laying around in pajamas gets pretty tiresome. I have a dark maroon robe that I could use for a blanket If I needed it. Mama, there is a negro that a jeep turned over on and he has been unconscious since Thursday. The wind blowed a regular gale last night and today and they tell me the weather is pretty cold outside. In here we have steam hear and I very seldom use over one blanket. A little while ago I took a good hot shower and put on clean pajamas so I feel like sleeping tonight.
Well, Mom there isn’t much news tonight so I will close until tomorrow, so,

Goodnight
Lots & lots of love & kisses

Born in Perkington, MS, on 1/30/1911, Ruse O. Sullivan had been a resident of Mobile, AL, for 77 years when he passed away on 9/15/1989 at the age of 78, according to his obituary in The Mobile Register, 9/16/1989. He served in the army from 8/7/42 - 12/3/43, at which time he was honorably discharged at Camp Lockett, California, by reason of Sec II AR 615-360, signifying a physical disability that rendered him unfit for military service, according to his enlistment record. Dear Mama –

Well I guess you have been pretty worried about me and if you had known I was sick you would have worried too much. Right now I will tell you that I am getting along allright and hope to be released about Monday. I have been in the hospital for a week and for awhile I was pretty sick fellow. I was brought in for appendicitis but before they could get me ready to operate they found out it was something like intestinal flu. Believe me for four or five days I did some real suffering. In one way I was lucky though as I had a middle aged civilian nurse and she watched over me day and night like a hawk. For about five days (OVER)

I didn’t have anything but a liquid diet so I am still pretty week[weak]. Yesterday afternoon I started sitting up and today the doctor told me I could start eating anything I wanted so long as I didn’t overeat. Today I feel good and I want to try to get out about Monday. I could have gotten someone else to write but then I knew you would be nearly crazy. Just imagine 32 years old and I had never been in a hospital before. At one time as I was so sick that I thought I would have to let them wire you but I prayed I would get better and it must have been answered. The chaplain here, an old fellow, stayed with me quite a bit and he still runs errands for me. The boys from camp kept coming to see me but last night was the first time that they could get in.

I haven’t had a shave in a week so this afternoon I am going to shave and clean up some. I am in a ward now with two more fellows and they are both from Tampa, Fla. so I have company. I hope this finds you feeling well and don’t worry about me as I am doing fine now. Coming up to the hospital was also the first time that I had ridden in an ambulance. I haven’t heard any more about my discharge but while I am in the hospital I am going to see if I can’t find out something. Mama, I will close now as I want to get this off so you will get it right away.

Dear Mama –

I hope this finds you feeling fine as I am doing fine after a busy two or three days. The forest fire got worse and they kept us on the alert until last night. Yesterday afternoon a navy plane made a forced landing on our parade ground and luckily no one was hurt. Three men had to bail out and one hit in a tree and got scratched up a bit. We still don’t know how many were hurt and killed in the fire but it must have been quite a few. Men are getting discharged out of here every day but the bunch I came in

(2)[Page 2] with are still waiting for our papers to come through. All we know is that we are subject to be called in any day now and get our papers and money, then take of[off] on our own. Tell Ola not to get frightened if I send her a telegram some day or night because when I am released I want you to know it. When I get out it will take me six or seven days to get home as a friends of mine and myself will probably stop in L.A. and Hollywood for a day or two. I can also get a heck of a lot better train connections from up there.

I still haven’t gotten paid but we will probably draw a partial pay this week. If I stay here much longer I will be too lazy to go to work when I do get home. About all we do is lay around the warehouse and we don’t even have to go out for drilling with the rest of the company. Mama, a tech sgt. that I run around with might come through Mobile with me. We just me when we moved in here, he is a tank mechanic from Seely, Calif., and lives in northern Vermont. There is no town around here to go to so we just hang around the camp together like two lost brothers.

A friend of mine from Long Island was discharged and his mother who is quite old, couldn’t believe it until his sister read her the papers twice. There is another big stage show here tomorrow night so I will probably go see it. We have a big open air theatre here that is really a beautiful place to see. Most of it is cut out of solid rock and is called Merritt Bowl. Mom, I am getting sleepy so I will close for now, so

Goodnight
Lots & lots of love & kisses

Dear Mama –

Just a few lines to let you know that I am doing fine and I hope this finds you well. I still haven’t gotten paid or heard anything new about getting out but some are leaving this week and maybe my papers will be in that bunch. Friday night, this company had a dance with girls from El Cajon an La Meso[La Mesa] and Saturday I was a table waiter in the mess hall so I have been pretty busy these last few days. There is also an awful forest fire about 12 miles from here and the camp has been on

(2)[Page 2]
the alert for the last two days. At this time there is a bunch of negroes from here and a bunch of marines fighting it but we can see the flame and smoke coming up above the mountains. The hospital here is overloaded with injured and some have already died. One good thing, this company doesn’t have to fight fire but once in awhile we have to take a load of soldiers out there to fight it. Right now I am pretty hot as I just got through with my washing. We can’t send any laundry out so that is a pretty good sign that we won’t be here very much longer.

Tell Anna that I really appreciate her letters and I am going to write her if I don’t head for home in the next few days. I was sorry to hear about Meg’s baby and I hope she is better by now. The first chance I get I will get some post cards for D. and I also want to send Janelle one. Mama, there is about three thousand cavalry horses here and the[they] sure are pretty especially when they parade. Well, it is nearly time for early chow so I will close, hoping to see you real soon.

Dear Mama –

Just a few line to let you know that I am feeling fine and I hope this finds you well. I received three letters from you today and I was sure glad to get them. Out here we have one heck of a time getting our mail. Well, I am almost certain of getting a discharge and I should have it before the middle of next month. Tomorrow is pay day but I doubt very much whether I will get paid here as I don’t belong to this company but am just attached here. One of our boys has a radio so we are

(2)[Page 2]
listening to Kay Kyser tonight. It is just 9 P.M. back home. Last night another fellow and myself got out an electric iron and gave our winter clothes a good pressing. If I get out anyways soon I am going to wear my winter clothes even if it is warm weather. I’ll wear these because the ones we wear home are the ones we get to keep.

One of our boys got a fractured leg last week so I went to see him tonight and he reminded me of little Janelle. He is just a kid and already has the bottom of the cast broke from trying to walk on it. Mama, there isn’t anything to write about so I will close for now.

If any mail comes home for me don’t open it but put it in another envelope and send it here.

Dear Mama –

I hope this finds you feeling fine as I am getting along O.K. We hardly have any work to do but I have an appetite like a horse. We are having some pretty cool weather but it sure makes you feel a whole lot better. Mama, you asked me what size sweater I wore well, don’t send me one until I het you know as I will probably be out of the army before then. If I happen to get discharged from here I will probably go up to L.A. for a day or two to visit some friends that I will probably never see again. Mama, it is kind of hard to

(2) [Page 2]
write as there is not very many places to go and we don’t get to see very much. There is a guy sleeping close to me that has a wife living in Whistler. He said her father works at the Alabama and is a foreman named Hames. There is another fellow in here named Graves from Troy, Ala. that has a car and if we get out at the same time he wants me to ride back with he and his wife. I wrote Ola a letter yesterday so I guess she will be surprised. Tell Anna that I was glad to hear from her and I will try to answer it tomorrow.

(3) [Page 3]
We have one fellow in here getting a discharge for being crazy and we nearly die laughing at him. When it comes down to sense though, he as[has] as much brains as any of us. Well, there isn’t anything else to write so I will close for now.

Goodnight
Lots & lots of love & kisses

Dear Mama –

I hope this finds you feeling fine as I am getting along O.K. We hardly have any work to do but I have an appetite like a horse. We are having some pretty cool weather but it sure makes you feel a whole lot better. Mama, you asked me what size sweater I wore well, don’t send me one until I het[let] you know as I will probably be out of the army before then. If I happen to get discharged from here I will probably go up to L.A. for a day or two to visit some friends that I will probably never see again. Mama, it is kind of hard to

(2)[Page 2]
write as there is not very many places to go and we don’t get to see very much.

(3)[Page 3]
We have one fellow in here getting a discharge for being crazy and we nearly die laughing at him. When it comes down to sense though, he as[has] as much brains as any of us. Well, there isn’t anything else to write so I will close for now.

Goodnight
Lots & lots of love & kisses

Dear Mama –

Just a few lines to let you know that I am feeling fine and I hope you are the same. I received a letter from you today that was mailed last Saturday so you can see how my mail is mixed up. Well, winter time is setting in up here in the mountains and it is getting pretty cool. If Ola was up here I know she would nearly freeze to death. Mama, I am pretty sure of getting a discharge now so maybe I will be home between now and this coming Christmas.

Last night the Camel Caravan was here and it was a really a good show. A bunch of us were going up to

There is about 100 men here waiting on a discharge and you can’t see anything wrong with about 99% of them.

Mama, you should be getting some mail from me as I have been writing pretty regular. This morning we had a heavy fog and you could hardly see fifty feet away from you. I was on K.P. Thursday and this one was one of the hardest I have ever put in. One good

thing about this camp is that we have the best food and cooks that I have seen in the army. I didn’t know until today that I was sleeping in a graveyard but we have one right beside our barracks. Three pioneer men and one woman are buried here and their graves are well taken care of and also fenced in. Tomorrow is Sunday and I have nothing to do so I might go over to San Diego or Tia Juana and see a bull fight. Mom, I will close now but I should know some time this coming week what I am going to do.

thing about this camp is that we have the best food and cooks that I have seen in the army.

Dear Mama –

Just a few lines to let you know that I am doing fine and I hope this finds you well. I am still hanging around here to see what happens and am now working in the D.M. clothes warehouse. My old outfit pulled out yesterday for [illegible] Falls, Wash. And it sure made me want to go with them. As things stand now I will either be discharged or else stay here for quite a while. One thing I don’t like about this outfit is that we will never go across. My leg wasn’t considered strong enough for a line outfit so

I am stuck here with six of my friends. Sometime between now and the first of the month I will know what I am going to do. We went on an all day picnic Sunday up in the mts. to Laguna National Forest and we really had a good time. Mama, I saw some trees up there so big that it just didn’t seem possible. Today I received three letters from you and one from Ola so that made me feel a heck of a lot better. I got the papers yesterday and that news about Joe Mitchell

serves him right. I sure am sorry to hear about little Janelle not liking school and if she belonged to me I wouldn’t send her. Well, a new bunch moved in here last night waiting for a discharge and a lot of them are from Alabama but I don’t know any of them. There is a big forest fire up in the mountains not far from here and we don’t have any lights tonight. Mama, there is so many squirrels out here that they are darned near tame.

Sunday if I don’t have anything to do a friend and myself will probably ride up to San Diego or Tia Juana and spend the day. If I am lucky enough to get a discharge I am going to either San Diego or Los Angeles and take a train home from there. This is one fine campy for a rest cure as there is nothing to do but sleep or go to a show as there is no towns close by. Well, Mom its getting dark so I will have to close until later, so,

Dear Mama –

Mama, I hope this finds you feeling fine as I am doing O.K. Well, I still haven’t heard from you but I guess my mail is all messed up. I am no longer in the 3457 ORD. and am one step nearer to being out of the army. I have a bad knee, shoulder and eye and I am pretty sure of getting a discharge. Nearly all of this company I am in now is just waiting around to get out. My old outfit is leaving Tuesday for Ft. Lewis, Washington and it makes me kind of

blue not to be going with them. Some of our outfit has already been discharged an there is seven of us down here together waiting to see what happens. My new address is S.C.U. 1961, CAMP LOCKETT, CALIF. I haven’t done much the last few days but lay around and get different examinations and X rays. There is a big stage show here tonight so when I finish this I will probably walk over. Well, there isn’t any new so I will close for now.

<text>This collection primarily features a collection of handwritten letters by PFC Ruse O'Neil Sullivan to his mother, Isabel, in Mobile, during his service in the U.S. Army, specialty Automotive Parts Clerk.

Dear Mama –

Just a few lines to let you know that I am feeling fine and I hope you are feeling well. I havent had but one letter from you so far but I guess they are being held up in my moving. Our entire company is pulling out next week for a new camp many, many miles from here but I am not going.

I went up for a discharge today and I have to go before the C.O.O.[C.D.D.?] in the morning. Don’t be surprised if you hear of me getting out within the next few weeks. I am not working this afternoon but just waiting

(2)[Page 2]
around to see if I get moved over to S.C.U. in this camp or whether I have to get to the general hospital in L.A. for another check up. I hate like the devil to leave this outfit but I don’t care to take another 5,000 mile trip. As it is if I get out I will have one heck of a long train or bus ride but I am pretty sure that I will take a train. Mama, I am too excited to write so I will close until I hear more about what is going to happen to me.

Lots & lots of love & kisses
