The bust of Lewis, who was the last survivor of the slave ship Clotilda, was created in 1959 by a local historian who fashioned it from a carving made by a teenage student of his. Akodjino, a filmmaker from Benin, and fellow filmmaker Felix Eklu of Togo donated the bust of Lewis, the last survivor of a group of Africans brought to Mobile aboard the slave ship Clotilda in 1860. The men also donated a bust of late Prichard Mayor John H. Smith, who took a major role in the establishment of the Africatown Folk Festival. The busts are on display at the welcome center, located at 1959 Cutoff Road in Mobile's Plateau community.
