Date: February 9, 1989
From: Ed Zelnicker
Re: Cowbellion de Rakin Society
The Cowbellion de Rakin, which actually meant "cowbells and rakes", was the first Mardi Gras Society in Mobile. The members literally took cowbells and rakes and marched down the street ringing the bells and shaking the rakes. The society was formed sometime during the 1840's by Michael Krafft, who was the moving spirit and founder. Apparently the organization, although it did have its ups and downs, continued up until the 1890's. At some point after the Civil War, in the 1870's, there were a number of Jewish members, as noted in the attached Constitution. The Jewish members remained in the organization until it disbanded in the 1890's.
Out of the Cowbellion de Rakin grew the Order of Myths, which celebrated its 122nd anniversary this year. Obviously, the OOM's was founded in 1867. Major Proskauer who was the father of Joseph Proskauer, a very prominent federal judge, was a member of the OOM's. David Bagwell is sure there were other Jewish members of the OOM's besides Major Proskauer. David is more of an authority on this than I am and he is doing historical research on it now.

Ed -- Bob Zeitz says you know more Jewish history of Mobile than anybody.
Attached is a list of those Cowbellions who signed the 1879 Constitution of the Cowbellion de Rakin Society. Several appear to be Jewish family names, namely, A. Pincus, B. Kahn, Frederick Bromberg, and perhaps others. I also know that Maj. A. Proskauer was a member.
A cross-check of OOM members shows that Proskauer joined The OOMs befoer 1878, F. E. Bromberg in 1878 (and Charles Bromberg Jr. in 1892).
Frankly, I didn't expect that in the 1870's. Maybe foolishly.
If you run across information on those men, please keep me in mind & share it. Incidentally, look forward to seeing you Tuesday.

Clotilda tale inspires tough but vital 'Dreams of Africa'
The extraordinary story of the Clotilda, Africatown and Cudjo Lewis has long begged for a competent scholarly analysis. Now, at last, a new book provides it, "Dreams of Africa in Alabama: The Slave Ship Clotilda and the Story of the Last Africans Brought to America" (Oxford, $35) by Sylviane Diouf is a compelling work grounded in prodigious research on multiple continents. Indeed, the notes and bibliography account for almost a quarter of this book's overall length.</text>
