The first church building, a frame structure was erected in 1909 on the southwest corner of Selma and Ann Streets and Government Streets. The present church of English Gothic Architecture, was erected in 1915, and the old church was used as a parish house. Text Any textual data included in the document The Jonathan Kirkbride Home, 104 Theater Street, considered the oldest building in Alabama, stands on what was originally the Fort Charlotte Reservation, which was owned first by the Spaniards, then the French, then the English, and finally by the Spaniards again, who surrendered it to the United States in 1813. In 1822 the Fort was demolished and salvaged materials used to construct the first Jail and Courthouse in Alabama. Around 1845 the building became the residence of Jonathan Kirkbride. In 1940 it was bought by the Historic Mobile Preservation Society. Square nails and wooden pegs were used in the construction. This home was bought by Miss Evans and presented to her parents, with the proceeds of her first book titled "Inez, a tale of the Alamo." It was here that she wrote many other books among which were "Beulah" in 1859, "Macariee" 1863, and "St. Elmo" in 1867. She was married here in 1868, and died in 1909.
