I had an awful tiresome trip back and I felt awful blue for a few days when I had time to think. Two of us were transferred to this camp and got here yesterday afternoon after driving about sixteen hours. Well, I thought that I had been in some high mountains until I came down here. Sometimes it seemed like we were driving in the clouds and this camp is in a valley high up in the mountains. It is a beautiful place and at (2)[Page 2] night it is darn near freezing cold. We are two miles from the Mexican border and about sixty miles from San Diego. It was sure good to get here and see some of my old friends that have been down here a pretty good while. Some of the men I know are getting out with On. D’s now and some time I think I will get another exam. I haven’t got my pay yet so I guess I will have to wait until the first of the month. There is lots of talk of this company splitting up and if it does I will probably go up to Los Angeles. Down here the closest town is 28 miles from camp and it is a small (3)[Page 3] place. The days are awful hot here, but at night we have to cover up because it is so high above sea level. We are surrounded by some of the highest mountains in Arizona. Our camp is located in a big park right in back of a beautiful country club. There is quite a few swimming pools around here and we can go in free anytime. This is supposed to be the healthiest spot out here but I am pretty sick of it all. We are on detached service and as yet we don’t know what we are going to do. Mama, I hope you listen to the news or else read about it because I don’t think this war will last much longer. It will be the happiest day of my life when I come back home to take care of you. Our camp is close to a big bomber training field and they are flying all day and night every day and some of the biggest planes I have ever seen. It is hard for me to write tonight as we are listening to the All-Star ball game and it is pretty noisy in here. It is night there but the sun is still shining out here. Mama, this is one oft of the prettiest shots I have seen so far. Last night we had one of the worst dust storms that I have ever seen, so bad in fact that you could hardly see 100 ft. After all this it started to rain, which is a surprise out here, and then it was just like fall of the year back home. As we are on detached service we don’t have very much work to do except keeping things straightened out. We have a pretty nice bunch of men here and my little buddy X. Johnson still sleeps in the barracks with one me. From where I am sitting I can look across at the El Conquistador Hotel that charges $300 per week board. This is also the place the Gen. Pershing stayed so long for his health. We are eating out of our mess kits but I don’t mind as we really eat pretty good. There is a boy from Mississippi sleeping next to me and when I got the papers from home yesterday he enjoyed them as much as I did. I haven’t heard from Ola, Ivey or Anna in a long time so I guess they must be pretty busy. I have kind of lost my desire to go to town as we have so many things to do in camp so I stay in most every night. We have a ball park nearby in our backyard and there is a game nearly every night. Born in Perkington, MS, on 1/30/1911, Ruse O. Sullivan had been a resident of Mobile, AL, for 77 years when he passed away on 9/15/1989 at the age of 78, according to his obituary in The Mobile Register, 9/16/1989. He served in the army from 8/7/42 - 12/3/43, at which time he was honorably discharged at Camp Lockett, California, by reason of Sec II AR 615-360, signifying a physical disability that rendered him unfit for military service, according to his enlistment record. His character was listed as “Excellent.” This collection was donated to the Local History & Genealogy Division of Mobile Public Library by the family of Ruse Sullivan’s daughter, Marcia Ann Sullivan Biggs, after her passing in 2023. Ann Biggs was a Mobile Public Library retiree and a Local History & Genealogy Division supernumerary who was passionate about history and researching family ancestry. Some of my friends are turning in their stuff and will leave out of here some time tomorrow so I will probably leave some time next week. I met a fellow here from Mobile that lives on Indiana Ave. but I don’t know him. I am sure now of getting a discharge but this waiting around sure gets on my nerves. I got paid Monday but about all we need money for is picture shows and cigarrettes. I gave a fellow ten dollars to day to bring me bag[back] a bag from Jucumba[Jacumba Hot Springs] but I doubt if he will find one there. Hand bags are really hard to buy in this part of the country. I still want to go up to Los Angeles for a couple of days when I get out but I will probably catch a train in El Centro and come on home from Yuma. We have two radios in the barracks now so we usually sit around at night and listen to them. Mama, the papers don’t print it but these marines that got burned up out here was something awful to think about. So many fire casualties were in our hospital that our papers were held up for at least two weeks.
