<text>This collection primarily features a collection of handwritten letters by PFC Ruse O'Neil Sullivan to his mother, Isabel, in Mobile, during his service in the U.S. Army, specialty Automotive Parts Clerk.

Born in Perkington, MS, on 1/30/1911, Ruse O. Sullivan had been a resident of Mobile, AL, for 77 years when he passed away on 9/15/1989 at the age of 78, according to his obituary in The Mobile Register, 9/16/1989. He served in the army from 8/7/42 - 12/3/43, at which time he was honorably discharged at Camp Lockett, California, by reason of Sec II AR 615-360, signifying a physical disability that rendered him unfit for military service, according to his enlistment record. His character was listed as “Excellent.”

This collection was donated to the Local History & Genealogy Division of Mobile Public Library by the family of Ruse Sullivan’s daughter, Marcia Ann Sullivan Biggs, after her passing in 2023. Ann Biggs was a Mobile Public Library retiree and a Local History & Genealogy Division supernumerary who was passionate about history and researching family ancestry.

Dear Mama –

Just a few lines to let you know that I am doing fine and I hope this finds you well. I still haven’t gotten paid or heard anything new about getting out but some are leaving this week and maybe my papers will be in that bunch. Friday night, this company had a dance with girls from El Cajon an La Meso[La Mesa] and Saturday I was a table waiter in the mess hall so I have been pretty busy these last few days. There is also an awful forest fire about 12 miles from here and the camp has been on

(2)[Page 2]
the alert for the last two days. At this time there is a bunch of negroes from here and a bunch of marines fighting it but we can see the flame and smoke coming up above the mountains. The hospital here is overloaded with injured and some have already died. One good thing, this company doesn’t have to fight fire but once in awhile we have to take a load of soldiers out there to fight it. Right now I am pretty hot as I just got through with my washing. We can’t send any laundry out so that is a pretty good sign that we won’t be here very much longer.

Tell Anna that I really appreciate her letters and I am going to write her if I don’t head for home in the next few days. I was sorry to hear about Meg’s baby and I hope she is better by now. The first chance I get I will get some post cards for D. and I also want to send Janelle one. Mama, there is about three thousand cavalry horses here and the[they] sure are pretty especially when they parade. Well, it is nearly time for early chow so I will close, hoping to see you real soon.

Dear Mama –

I hope this finds you feeling fine as I am doing fine after a busy two or three days. The forest fire got worse and they kept us on the alert until last night. Yesterday afternoon a navy plane made a forced landing on our parade ground and luckily no one was hurt. Three men had to bail out and one hit in a tree and got scratched up a bit. We still don’t know how many were hurt and killed in the fire but it must have been quite a few. Men are getting discharged out of here every day but the bunch I came in

(2)[Page 2] with are still waiting for our papers to come through. All we know is that we are subject to be called in any day now and get our papers and money, then take of[off] on our own. Tell Ola not to get frightened if I send her a telegram some day or night because when I am released I want you to know it. When I get out it will take me six or seven days to get home as a friends of mine and myself will probably stop in L.A. and Hollywood for a day or two. I can also get a heck of a lot better train connections from up there.

I still haven’t gotten paid but we will probably draw a partial pay this week. If I stay here much longer I will be too lazy to go to work when I do get home. About all we do is lay around the warehouse and we don’t even have to go out for drilling with the rest of the company. Mama, a tech sgt. that I run around with might come through Mobile with me. We just me when we moved in here, he is a tank mechanic from Seely, Calif., and lives in northern Vermont. There is no town around here to go to so we just hang around the camp together like two lost brothers.

A friend of mine from Long Island was discharged and his mother who is quite old, couldn’t believe it until his sister read her the papers twice. There is another big stage show here tomorrow night so I will probably go see it. We have a big open air theatre here that is really a beautiful place to see. Most of it is cut out of solid rock and is called Merritt Bowl. Mom, I am getting sleepy so I will close for now, so

Goodnight
Lots & lots of love & kisses

Born in Perkington, MS, on 1/30/1911, Ruse O. Sullivan had been a resident of Mobile, AL, for 77 years when he passed away on 9/15/1989 at the age of 78, according to his obituary in The Mobile Register, 9/16/1989. Dear Mama –

Well I guess you have been pretty worried about me and if you had known I was sick you would have worried too much. Right now I will tell you that I am getting along allright and hope to be released about Monday. I have been in the hospital for a week and for awhile I was pretty sick fellow. I was brought in for appendicitis but before they could get me ready to operate they found out it was something like intestinal flu. Believe me for four or five days I did some real suffering. In one way I was lucky though as I had a middle aged civilian nurse and she watched over me day and night like a hawk. For about five days (OVER)

I didn’t have anything but a liquid diet so I am still pretty week[weak]. Yesterday afternoon I started sitting up and today the doctor told me I could start eating anything I wanted so long as I didn’t overeat. Today I feel good and I want to try to get out about Monday. I could have gotten someone else to write but then I knew you would be nearly crazy. Just imagine 32 years old and I had never been in a hospital before. At one time as I was so sick that I thought I would have to let them wire you but I prayed I would get better and it must have been answered. The chaplain here, an old fellow, stayed with me quite a bit and he still runs errands for me. The boys from camp kept coming to see me but last night was the first time that they could get in.

I haven’t had a shave in a week so this afternoon I am going to shave and clean up some. I am in a ward now with two more fellows and they are both from Tampa, Fla. so I have company. I hope this finds you feeling well and don’t worry about me as I am doing fine now. Coming up to the hospital was also the first time that I had ridden in an ambulance. I haven’t heard any more about my discharge but while I am in the hospital I am going to see if I can’t find out something. Mama, I will close now as I want to get this off so you will get it right away.

Dear Mama –

Just a few lines to let you know that I am doing a lot better and I hope this finds you well. This is Sunday and it sure has seemed like a long day. One of my buddies slipped in before visiting hours today and brought me an arm full of newspapers so I have read most all day. I asked the nurse today and she told me it would probably be the middle of the week before I could get out. I feel alright now and this laying around in pajamas gets pretty tiresome. I have a dark maroon robe that I could use for a blanket If I needed it. Mama, there is a negro that a jeep turned over on and he has been unconscious since Thursday. The wind blowed a regular gale last night and today and they tell me the weather is pretty cold outside. In here we have steam hear and I very seldom use over one blanket. A little while ago I took a good hot shower and put on clean pajamas so I feel like sleeping tonight.
Well, Mom there isn’t much news tonight so I will close until tomorrow, so,

Goodnight
Lots & lots of love & kisses

Dear Mama –

This leaves me feeling fine and I hope this finds you feeling much better by now. I got two letters from you today and I was glad to get them but you being sick keeps me worried. This is Sunday with nothing much to do although I had a few clothes to wash and iron. I don’t know for sure yet but I will probably be home around the first of the month. As for the the auto trip. I am not going to take it and so far I am planning on leaving from Los Angeles. We still haven’t drawn any pay yet so when I do get it I should have a pretty good roll.

(2)[Page 2]
Mama I am glad to hear that Gene likes the place better and I hope that he and TooToo does get married. We have had some pretty cool weather but today is a nice warm day with plenty of sunshine. The rainy season l starts out here shortly and I would like to be out of these mountains before then. Tell Janelle I was glad to hear from her and on my way home I will have to pick her up some little something. About all we have to do is go to the movies and I go about four times each week. When I get out I doubt if I will see that many in a years time.

(3)[Page 3]
Mama from now on until I get home you just take it easy and don’t do any work. After I get back all you will have to do is cook for me. Well, there isn’t much to write about so I will close for now.

Goodnight

Dear Mama –

Just a few lines to let you know that I am feeling fine and I hope this finds you well. Mama, the weather is fine out here although it gets down around 20° nearly every day. So far we haven’t had any snow but the people seem to be expecting it any time. I worked today and I seem to be getting my strength back pretty quick. It shouldn’t be very long before my discharge comes through as I see my name is on the board to get a final dental exam at 8 AM in the morning. Mama, tell Ola that I am going to send a package to her house within a few days and she can give it to you. You should see (OVER)

the swell fair of boats that I got today and I am going to ship them one day this week. I am also putting a wool muffler in for you and maybe some blankets. You have probably read in the papers about the awful forest fires out here well they are just a few miles from this camp. A premature baby was found on our dump in a glass jar so there is a pretty big stink in camp trying to find out where it came from. Well, Mom I will close for now hoping you are in good health.

Goodnight
Lots & lots of love & kisses

Bill

Dear Mama –

Just a few lines to let you know that I am feeling fine and I hope this finds you a lot better. The nights are real cold here but it sure makes one feel a whole lot better. Some of my friends are turning in their stuff and will leave out of here some time tomorrow so I will probably leave some time next week. I met a fellow here from Mobile that lives on Indiana Ave. but I don’t know him. I am sure now of getting a discharge but this waiting around sure gets on my nerves. I got paid Monday but about all we need money for is picture shows and cigarrettes. I gave a fellow ten dollars to day to bring me bag[back] a bag from Jucumba[Jacumba Hot Springs] but I doubt if he will find one there.

Hand bags are really hard to buy in this part of the country. I still want to go up to Los Angeles for a couple of days when I get out but I will probably catch a train in El Centro and come on home from Yuma. We have two radios in the barracks now so we usually sit around at night and listen to them. Mama, the papers don’t print it but these marines that got burned up out here was something awful to think about. So many fire casualties were in our hospital that our papers were held up for at least two weeks. Mom, I will close as there isn’t anything to write about, so,

Dear Mama –

Just a few lines to let you know that I am feeling fine and I hope this finds you a lot better. I haven’t heard from you in two days so I hope you aren’t sick I heard today that we were going to be discharged about the 25th of this month but it might come through sooner than that. I have met a lot of new fellows here from the south and a lot of them are getting out.

I would like to do something as I am getting fat with nothing to do. Some of the fellows here have been across in battles and been shot all to hell but they are pretty cheerful. I am laying here trying to decide whether to go to San Diego and Tia Juana over the week end or to stay in.

Sunday is the last bull fight in Tia Juana and I would like to see it. I also want to go to one of these towns and get me a traveling bag. A sgt. in charge of the warehouse gave me two good army blankets and if I get a way I will send them home. The army is cutting down on the amount of clothes you can take home but I will have enough to last awhile. We will also get a coupon so that we can buy a pair of civilian shoes.

Well, I will close now hoping to hear from you soon.

Dear Mama –

Just a few lines tonight to let you know that I am feeling fine and I hope you are feeling better. I received two letters from you today and I was sure glad to get them. Mama, your letter yesterday in which you told me you were sick has had me worried all day. Please don’t do any work as I want you to be feeling fine when I get home. If I didn’t have you to come home to I would either stay in the army or else go to work out here on the coast. One fellow reported back to camp yesterday that had been A.W.O.L. for 114 days so I guess he will catch plenty of hell. Well, I weighed today and I have gained most of my weight back as I now weight 169 lbs.

There is a woman working in the trading post here that wants me to go over to her house so when I finish this I think will go meet her after she is through work. There is quite a few Mexican girls here, as we are right on the border, but very few white girls. I sure would like for Anna to see this country as it is awful mountainous with deep green valleys and all kinds of flowers and shrubs. It takes a train five hours to go seventy miles through these mountains and then it is down in the Imperial Valley, the second hottest place in the U.S.

Well, Mom, I will close for now, hoping to hear that you are better.

Goodnight

I received a letter from you today and I was sure sorry to hear that you had mashed your finger. It has been raining here all day and the weather is pretty close to freezing tonight. This is the rainy season and it is liable to rain for two weeks without stopping. I was sorry to hear about Austin getting into trouble and I hope he got out of it O.K.. We have but very little excitement in this camp as it is pretty well isolated up here in the mountains. I was on K.P. yesterday and was pretty well tired when I got off so I didn’t lose much time getting into bed. This will probably be my last K.P. duty for this stretch in

the army. Well, I guess Gene and ToTo are married by this time and I am glad for both of them. I can’t understand why her parents were so down on him as I think they were lucky for her to get such a good boy. Mama, I believe you wrote me that Carrie was in Alaska, well if she went it cost somone[someone] besides Uncle Sam a good pile of money, probably Francis. We really eat good in this camp and there is more fruit and milk than we ever use. I still haven’t found me a bag and now my billfold is shot but I can get one of them in the Trading Post. We have a railroad station right on the past as the past takes in the town of Campo. Mama, I hope Ola isn’t sick as I think everyday that maybe I will hear from her or else Anna or Norma. Although I don’t write I still think
