It was the new Rose of Peace.) Old Hickory was in charge of Fort Morgan at the time and tried, but in vain, to reach the Fort, by boat, from Mobile while the battle was on. Prince Madoc landed here in 1170, which was 322 years before Columbus. There has been some kind of fortification on this point since 1559 when the Spanish took it from the Indians. It is the one and only place in the U.S.A. which can boast of seven flags, if we count the flag of surrender and also seven battles. DeSoto's wife Isabella spent the summer of 1540 here in the harbor while waiting for DeSoto to come down the Alabama River to join her.
