Text Any textual data included in the document Georgia Cottage, the childhood home of the famous southern authoress, Augusta Evans, was built on Spanish Grant by slave labor about 1840. Square nails and wooden pegs were used in the construction. This home was bought by Miss Evans and presented to her parents, with the proceeds of her first book titled "Inez, a tale of the Alamo." It was here that she wrote many other books among which were "Beulah" in 1859, "Macariee" 1863, and "St. Elmo" in 1867. She was married here in 1868, and died in 1909. The present owners Dr. & Mrs. E.S. Sledge bought and completely restored the property in 1935.
