Missed opportunity
Africans' experience lost in harangue about America's racism
The Slave Ship Clotilda and the Making of AfricaTown, USA: Spirit of Our Ancestors By Natalie S. Robertson
Praeger Publishers, $44.95
Reviewed by Michael Thomason
Special to the Press-Register
The story of the Clotilda and Africa Town has resulted in two books in the last few months, both by women of African heritage, both with doctorates, neither of whom is from Mobile. Sylviane Diouf's "Dreams of Africa in Alabama: The Slave Ship Clotilda and the Story of the Last Africans Brought to America" (Oxford, 2007) was the first, and Natalie Robertson's "The Slave Ship Clotilda and the Making of AfricaTown, USA: Spirit of Our Ancestors" has followed almost immediately.
