Description
An account of the resource
The influenza pandemic of 1918, also known as the Spanish flu, struck the state of Alabama in September of 1918, with devastating results. The pandemic peaked in Mobile, AL, in late October, 1918. <br /><br />This collection follows news articles from the local newspaper, The Mobile Register, from October, 1918, to January 1, 1919, when the city was breathing a sigh of relief and looking towards the new year with hope. World War I was over, and the influenza pandemic was subsiding. The Register's editorial of January 1, 1919, exclaimed:<br /><br />"<strong>Hail great Year! Glad are they who have lived to give you greeting</strong>."

Description
An account of the resource
Photographs taken of Mobile buildings for a project assigned to architect Nicholas Holmes, as part of the Historic American Buildings Survey.
"When Nicholas Holmes - the seventh generation of his family to bear the name - died in 1957, his son Nicholas sought an appropriate way to pay homage to his father's memory.
His decision was to purchase from the Library of Congress copies of more than 600 blueprints and drawings of historic buildings in Mobile compiled under the aegis of the Historical American Buildings Survey during the Depression.
He donated the works to the Mobile Historic Preservation Society and selected the Mobile Public Library as the depository for these drawings and photographs so that interested persons might have free access to the documents..."
