6-B--Mobile Press Register Sunday, July 5, 1981
[...]Africatown works toward its future, honors its past
By Cammie East
Living Today Writer
Africatown... The name, or variants of it, go back at least to the 1880s: an "African Colony" is shown on the 1889 Boudousquie Map of Mobile, located near Magazine Point. It evokes the origins of at least one segment of the greater Mobile community, and its romance leads the inquirer along hidden paths into the past.

Mr. Zietz,
Here are the photocopies you requested from Journal of Negro History Oct. 1927, vol. 12, pages 648-663. Article: Cuduo's Own Story of the last African Slaver.
Thanks,
Windy Smith
CUDJO'S OWN STORY OF THE LAST AFRICAN SLAVER
About four miles above Mobile, at the mouth of the Chickasabogue Creek (now called Three Mile Creek), on red clay bluffs, on the Old Telegraph Road, but now reached by the new Bay Bridge Road and Craft Highway, is African Town. The site was once and still is to a large extent the possession of the Meaher Brothers, Tim, Lim and Burns; these men had a mill and shipyard at the mouth of the creek and built vessels for blockade running, river trade and filibustering expeditions.

Legacy of a 'peculiar institution'

DEATH OF CAPTAIN TIM MEAHER, THE VENERABLE STEAMBOAT MAN.
Yesterday died Captain Timothy Meaher, long known as one of the best and most successful of steamboatmen, who plied the rivers in the palmiest days of the business before and since the war. He died at his home on the Telegraph road, three miles from the city, where for some years he has lived in retirement. He was seventy-nine years of age. [...]
THE KING OF WHYDAH'S WIVES.
The King of Whydah's wives were objects of special care to himself, and of enforced veneration to his people. The favourite ones lived in the palace with him; the others were accommodated in adjoining buildings. No men were employed in the royal household, and the king was served solely by his wives[...]

Women rule the household, the amazonian principle extending into all the [..] of life. Many of the king's amazons are married women, the marriages, however, having taken place before they were drafted into the army, and in all these cases the husband stays at home and cares for the children, if there are any, while his wife goes to war [...]

Remembering Clotilda
During Black History Month, Americans should take time to reflect on the 1860 voyage of the schooner Clotilda from Mobile to Africa and back -- the last documented slaving voyage in U.S. history. This human rights abuse was a capital crime under the law, but no one was ever punished for it. Nor was any restitution ever made to the 110 Africans brought by force to American shores on the eve of the Civil War. They dreamed of returning to Africa, but could never do so. Many now lie buried at Old Plateau Cemetery on the edge of Mobile. (Traditionally, the Clotilda voyage was placed in 1859 and the ship identified as Clotilde, but recent research has shifted scholarly opinion.)
