The Last Slave Ship
The "Clotilda" was outfitted as a slaver at the major expense of Capt. Timothy Meaher due to a bet made with several eastern gentlemen. They were passengers aboard a steamboat (not named) cruising up the Alabama River. The conversation concerned secession from the Union and gradually turned to the great risk involved in landing any more slaves in America, and from this came the bet by Capt. Meaher that it would be done.
