Vital history can be lost, forgotten or ignored
Preserving the legacy left by African-Americans requires more than lip service
By Michael Thomason
Special to the Press-Register

Legacy of a 'peculiar institution'
by Chris McFadyen
Story has it that Mobile shipbuilder and riverboat captain Tim Meaher was out on the wharves ragging the boys one day in the fall of war-charged '58, feeling mean and rangey, deploring the federal revenue cutters that were patrolling the bay.

LAST CARGO OF SLAVES
In the spring of 1861 the case of the United States against Burns Meaher and John M. Dabney, charged with importing 103 natives of Africa for slaves into the United States on the schooner Clotilde--28 men and 25 women, 25 boys and 25 girls--was dismissed out of court because of the war coming on, the court itself being outside the jurisdiction of the United States. W. G. Jones was judge; R. B. Owen, clerk of the court, A. J. Requier, the poet, district attorney, and C. M. Godbold, marshal: and this was the flat ending of the very lively romance that was [...] going when Captain Tim Meaher in 1859 disputed the statement of certain of his northern passengers aboard his steamboat, the Roger B. Taney, that it still was possible to import negroes from Africa in face of all that the United States and Great Britain could do to prevent it [...] hundred thousand dollars [Craighead 357-358]. [...]
THERE were two slave markets conducted on upper Royal Street in slavery times, and were in operation in 1863, as shown [...] The advertisement of the other "mart" closes with a notice that "John D. Ragland, Esq. can[?] be found at the above office [Delaney 194]."

GSHR Gulf South Historical Review
Vol. 15 No. 1
The Journal of the Gulf South Historical Association [...]
From the Archives: Researching a Legend
Michael Thomason
For over a century Mobilians have known of the story of the "last slave ship," the Clotilde, which brought Africans here illegally in 1859. Various people have written about this story over the years, but most have accepted the account of Emma Langdon Roche contained in her 1914 book, Historic Sketches of the South. The last of the survivors, Cudjo Lewis, died in 1935. There are few original sources, oral or written to work with, and a fog of myth has tended to obscure even those.
