[...] Sunday Morning, November 1, 1914
[...] OF THIS CITY IN CIVIL WAR DAYS
[...] The last boat of slaves was brought to Mobile by the Meaher Brothers, father and uncle of our present townsman, Mr. Gus Meaher. They built a ship at [...], which they well supplied with cheap jewelry and trinkets, which they dispatched to Africa. On their arrival, they bought from the king of that country quite a number of these African people, paying for them with these trinkets and jewelry. The ship returned with her load of [...] freight, and on casting anchor at the Fleet, she was met by the river steamer, John B. Taney. The slaves were all placed below deck and the hatches closed down. The steamer came up the bar and passed the city of Mobile, went up the river a short distance, returned, discharged [...] cargo of [...] freight at a point now named Plateau. The descendants of these people are there now, the old chief of the tribe, named Dahomy, is still living at Plateau, and can be seen any time by taking a Magazine Point car.
