In addition to writing about the Battle of Mobile Bay, Friend was active in the search for vessels believed to be sunk in the local waterways, including the Clotilda, believed to be the last slave ship that came to America.

Clotilda author delivers story

Friday evening at the Museum of Mobile, Sylviane Diouf said her new book, "Dreams of Africa in Alabama: The Slave Ship Clotilda and the Story of the Last Africans Brought to America," is the first about the slave trade "to document the story from all angles" -- the ship captain, the slaveowners and the Africans themselves.
