Description
An account of the resource
Photographs taken of Mobile buildings for a project assigned to architect Nicholas Holmes, as part of the Historic American Buildings Survey.
"When Nicholas Holmes - the seventh generation of his family to bear the name - died in 1957, his son Nicholas sought an appropriate way to pay homage to his father's memory.
His decision was to purchase from the Library of Congress copies of more than 600 blueprints and drawings of historic buildings in Mobile compiled under the aegis of the Historical American Buildings Survey during the Depression.
He donated the works to the Mobile Historic Preservation Society and selected the Mobile Public Library as the depository for these drawings and photographs so that interested persons might have free access to the documents..."

Georgia Cottage, the childhood home of the famous southern authoress, Augusta Evans, was built on Spanish Grant by slave labor about 1840. Square nails and wooden pegs were used in the construction. This home was bought by Miss Evans and presented to her parents, with the proceeds of her first book titled "Inez, a tale of the Alamo." It was here that she wrote many other books among which were "Beulah" in 1859, "Macariee" 1863, and "St. Elmo" in 1867. She was married here in 1868, and died in 1909. The present owners Dr. & Mrs. E.S. Sledge bought and completely restored the property in 1935.
