Clotilda: The Last Slave Voyage
By Gary Foy
In March, 1860, the schooner Clotilda crossed the bar at the mouth of Mobile Bay outward bound. She made Cuba in three and a half days and set course for the slave coast of Africa. Aboard were 9 crew, a first and second mate, and captain William Foster, who had built the schooner himself in 1855 in Mobile.

DEATH OF CAPTAIN TIM MEAHER, THE VENERABLE STEAMBOAT MAN.
Yesterday died Captain Timothy Meaher, long known as one of the best and most successful of steamboatmen, who plied the rivers in the palmiest days of the business before and since the war. He died at his home on the Telegraph road, three miles from the city, where for some years he has lived in retirement. He was seventy-nine years of age. [...]

LAST CARGO OF SLAVES
In the spring of 1861 the case of the United States against Burns Meaher and John M. Dabney, charged with importing 103 natives of Africa for slaves into the United States on the schooner Clotilde--28 men and 25 women, 25 boys and 25 girls--was dismissed out of court because of the war coming on, the court itself being outside the jurisdiction of the United States. W. G. Jones was judge; R. B. Owen, clerk of the court, A. J. Requier, the poet, district attorney, and C. M. Godbold, marshal: and this was the flat ending of the very lively romance that was [...] going when Captain Tim Meaher in 1859 disputed the statement of certain of his northern passengers aboard his steamboat, the Roger B. Taney, that it still was possible to import negroes from Africa in face of all that the United States and Great Britain could do to prevent it [...] hundred thousand dollars [Craighead 357-358]. [...]
THERE were two slave markets conducted on upper Royal Street in slavery times, and were in operation in 1863, as shown [...] The advertisement of the other "mart" closes with a notice that "John D. Ragland, Esq. can[?] be found at the above office [Delaney 194]."

The Last Slave Ship <br />A Fictional Account of the Final Voyage of the Clotilde <br />By L.W. Gibbs <br />(<em>The following is a fictionalized account of the final voyage of the </em>Clotilde<em>--the last known shipment of slaves into the United States. The </em>Clotilde<em> was built in Mobile in 1856 by Captain William Foster. Foster was in command of her last voyage in 1859, and he negotiated the purchase of 125 African slaves for a fellow Mobilian, Captain Timothy Meaher. This story is based on Foster's handwritten recollections, in 1890, of this voyage.</em>)<br />Silently, the wooden skiff moves along the bank of the dark river. The only sound is the constant hum of the delta mosquitoes as they swarm around in this breezeless July night. Before me the dark features of my oarsmen are lit by the glow of the burning hulk that was my ship, the <em>Clotilde</em>. While I may understand the necessity of destroying her, and all other evidence of our deed, the act saddens me for she was the fastest schooner out of Mobile, possibly the entire Gulf Coast. I took great pride in commanding her, and my pride, in part, is the cause of her destruction.

LAST CARGO OF SLAVES.
How a Ship Load of Negroes Were Imported in 1861.
An Alabama Captain's Desperate but Successful Undertaking--One Hundred and Sixty Slaves Landed--The Only Full-Blood African Colony in America.
Special Correspondence of the Globe-Democrat.
Mobile, Ala., November 26.--Business called the GLOBE-DEMOCRAT correspondent recently to the residence of Capt. Tim Meaher, three miles from this city. The house is a two-story frame, situated upon the crown of a red clay hill, and faces to the south. An ordinary picket fence surrounds the house, which has a broad gallery extending across the front. Upon this gallery, basking in the noonday sun of a warm November day, enjoying the balmy breeze that blew in from the gulf, was seated the venerable Captain, from whose lips was learned the story of the importation of the last cargo of slaves into the South.
